Many musicians who discover partimenti feel the same thing: curiosity, followed by confusion. Because partimenti was historically taught as an oral tradition, the earliest steps were rarely written down. This post explores why that gap exists and introduces a new, forever-free workshop designed to rebuild those missing first steps.

What do an ancient blacksmith’s forge, a freezing winter day in Winnipeg, and the inner workings of the human ear have in common? More than two thousand years after the legend of Pythagoras, the question that captivated Greek philosophers remains as fascinating as ever: why do some tones seem to belong together?

If harmony is simply how tones fit together, where does partimento fit? This essay argues that partimento’s uniqueness lies not in the harmonic language it teaches—which is familiar to anyone who has studied common-practice theory—but in how it teaches. By learning through playing, singing, improvising, and composing, musicians develop an understanding they can carry in their ears, fingers, and imagination, preparing them to engage with music far beyond the eighteenth century.
